ST. BASIL'S CATHEDRAL, MOSCOW, RUSSIA

Onion domes are popular in Russian architecture and are often associated with churches.

The domes were designed to deal with Russia’s heavy snowfalls. Another reason for the popularity of the onion dome is the influence of Byzantine architecture with Russian builders copying the styles of the center of Orthodox Christianity, namely Constantinople.

Saint Basil's Cathedral, is a church in Red Square in Moscow, Russia. The building is now a museum.  It was built from 1555–61 on orders from Ivan the Terrible and commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan. The building is shaped as a flame of a bonfire rising into the sky

The domes are made of wood.
